The People’s Republic of China and the Principality of Monaco established consular relations on January 16, 1995 and diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level on February 6, 2006. Chinese Ambassador to France Deng Li also serves as Ambassador to Monaco. The Monaco’s Ambassador to China (non-resident) is Marie-Pascale Boisson, and Monaco has each Honorary Consul respectively in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China-Monaco relations have developed steadily. In March 2019, President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Monaco, the first time that a Chinese president visited Monaco. In April 2007, Prince Albert II paid a state visit to China. In August 2008, Prince Albert II attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in China. In October 2010, Prince Albert II attended the Monaco National Pavilion Day event at the Shanghai World Expo in China. In August 2014, Prince Albert II attended the opening ceremony of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in China. In September 2018, Prince Albert II paid a state visit to China. On January 16 2020, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Prince Albert II to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In February 2022, Prince Albert II attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics in China. On January 16, 2025, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Prince Albert II to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Other important visits include: the visit of Crown Prince Albert to China in June 1999; Crown Prince Albert presided over the opening ceremony of the Honorary Consulate of Monaco in Shanghai in June 2002; Vice Premier Li Lanqing and State Councilor Wu Yi led the Shanghai delegation to bid for the World Expo to attend the International Exhibition Conference held in Monaco in December 2002; Crown Prince Albert led an economic and trade delegation to conduct an informal visit to China in November 2004; Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing paid an official visit to Monaco in February 2006.
In May 2008, after the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, Prince Albert II sent a letter of condolences to President Hu Jintao, and the Monaco government and its Red Cross provided 150000 euros in emergency assistance to China. In August 2021, Prince Albert II sent a letter of condolences regarding the severe flood disaster in Henan Province to President Xi Jinping.
According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China, the total import and export volume between China and Monaco reaches US$20.155 million in 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 31.9%. Chinese export volume was US$7.145 million, a year-on-year decrease of 33.1%, while Chinese import value was US$13.01 million, a year-on-year decrease of 31.2%. Chinese imported products mainly include chemical industry products, electromechanical audiovisual equipments and their components, etc. Our exported products mainly include electromechanical audiovisual equipments and their components, base metals and their products, etc.
