On November 27, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Enrique Mora held the 16th round of China-EU diplomatic policy consultations in Beijing. The two sides had an exchange of views on the international situation, their respective foreign policy, China-EU relations, and international and regional hotspot issues of mutual interest and concern.

Sun Weidong said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, and is of important significance of building on past achievements and working for fresh progress. The world today is facing changes unseen in a century, and China-EU relations are faced with new opportunities and new challenges. The two sides should keep to the overarching direction of growing China-EU relations, defend the essence of mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, and show full respect for each other's core interests. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the EU to make preparations for the China-EU Summit to be held at the end of this year. Sun Weidong mainly expounded on such important concepts as building a human community with a shared future and Belt and Road cooperation, and introduced remarkable achievements made in China's economic growth and Chinese modernization. Sun Weidong also expounded on China's solemn position on the Taiwan question, and emphasized that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory, and the key to safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is to be committed to the one-China principle.

Enrique Mora said that the EU adheres to the one-China principle, and stands ready to work with China to be committed to growing constructive and stable EU-China relations. The EU and China both uphold multilateralism, and will continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation on improving global governance and jointly respond to crises and challenges in the international situation.
