Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea

On November 10, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Papua New Guinea is a sincere friend and an important cooperative partner of China in the South Pacific region. We are willing to work together with the Papua New Guinean side, to expand exchanges and cooperation in economy and trade, energy and resources, infrastructure construction, agriculture, forestry and fishery, people-to-people and cultural engagement and other fields so as to promote greater development of the bilateral relations. Papua New Guinea is an important promoter and leader of regional cooperation in the Pacific island region. In a few days, I will meet in Fiji with leaders of the Pacific island countries that we have established diplomatic relationship with, and I look forward to discussing matters of vital importance on friendly cooperation with each island country that has established diplomatic relationship with China, Papua New Guinea included.

O'Neill expressed that the Papua New Guinean side is grateful to the Chinese side for its support and assistance. The investment of Chinese enterprises in Papua New Guinea has promoted the economic development and improved people's livelihood in Papua New Guinea. The Papua New Guinean side hopes to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the Chinese side to jointly promote the development of the relations between the Pacific island countries and China.
