President Xi Jinping Meets with Governor-General of Papua New Guinea Michael Ogio

On September 1, 2015, President Xi Jinping met with Governor-General Michael Ogio of Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping welcomed Michael Ogio's visit to China to attend the commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascist War, and thanked the PNG government and people for their years of active maintenance of the cemetery of Chinese soldiers dead in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Rabaul, PNG.

Xi Jinping stressed that since the establishment of the diplomatic relations, the two countries have supported each other and cooperated for mutual benefit and common development. The bilateral relations have maintained a sound development momentum. In recent years, the bilateral exchanges and cooperation have been continuously expanded in extensive fields such as trade, investment, agriculture, forestry, fishery, culture, education and public health. We are willing to work with PNG to maintain the momentum of exchanges on high and all other levels, strengthen dialogues and exchanges, deepen mutual trust and cooperation, and bring the bilateral relations to higher levels. China and PNG share strong economic complementarities and very wide space for cooperation. Both sides should strengthen the complementary advantages and connection of development strategies, and continually enhance the level of practical cooperation. China appreciates PNG's efforts in boosting regional cooperation among the Pacific island countries, and supports PNG in hosting the APEC meeting in 2018. China is also willing to strengthen communication and coordination with PNG on major issues such as sustainable development and handling climate change to jointly safeguard the interests of the developing countries.

Michael Ogio said that he is glad to visit China and commemorate with the Chinese people the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations over 30 years ago, the PNG-China relations have enjoyed substantial development. PNG appreciates China's long-term help and support to PNG, is willing to deepen cooperation with China in all fields, and thanks China for supporting PNG in hosting the APEC meeting in 2018.
