China and Barbados

In 2021, the friendly and cooperative relations between the People’s Republic of China and Barbados continued to deepen.

The two countries maintained high-level exchanges. In July, President Xi Jinping had a phone call with Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley at the latter’s request, and exchanged views on deepening bilateral relations and cooperation against COVID. In November, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the first President of Barbados Sandra Prunella Mason on her assumption of office. In June, leader of the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) Mia Mottley and leader of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) Verla de Peiza sent congratulatory letters respectively to General Secretary Xi Jinping on the 100th anniversary of the CPC. In December, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the third Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, and Barbados’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Jerome Walcott attended the Forum online.

The two countries carried out effective cooperation against COVID. China sent multiple batches of pandemic containment supplies to Barbados. In June, Chinese vaccines were delivered to Barbados. The two countries maintained close coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Practical cooperation and friendly exchanges between the two countries in various fields unfolded smoothly. The Sam Lords Castle Hotel project made steady progress. China and Barbados jointly held a series of cultural events in Barbados to celebrate the seventh Fish and Dragon Festival and Chinese New Year. China continued to provide government scholarships and training opportunities for Barbados.
