Wang Yi and Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado of Panama Hold Political Consultation

On September 17, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado of Panama held the first political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries.

Wang Yi said that the establishment of China-Panama diplomatic relations conforms to the trend of the times and accords with the aspiration of the people. Both countries have witnessed close exchanges with early outcomes yielded from bilateral cooperation since the two countries established diplomatic relations 3 months ago. Panama opens its door to China, in return, China is also willing to open arms to welcome new friend. China and Panama can be cooperative partners with common development, common prosperity and long-term reliability. China welcomes President Juan Carlos Varela to visit China within this year, so as to inject robust impetus to bilateral cooperation in a series of areas such as economy, trade, investment, production capacity, maritime transportation, aviation, tourism and culture.

Wang Yi expressed that China is willing to, together with Panama, constantly consolidate political foundation of bilateral relations and believes Panama will well handle the Taiwan issue in accordance with the communiqué on the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and put all the commitments into practice. China stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with Panama in multilateral affairs and safeguard Panama’s legitimate interests with its own influence in the international occasions.

Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado expressed that establishing diplomatic relations with China accords with the expectation and aspiration of all circles in Panama and opens a new chapter for bilateral relations. Panama cherishes its traditional friendship with China, welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest and conduct business in Panama and is ready to provide support and convenience for their operation in Panama. The country hopes to negotiate on and sign bilateral free trade agreement with China at an early date and enhance cooperation with China in infrastructure construction, finance, maritime transportation, aviation, tourism, culture and other fields, so as to further benefit the two peoples. Panama supports the Belt and Road Initiative set forth by China with the hope to participate in it, in a bid to make contributions to promoting regional connectivity. The Panamanian side is willing to be a bridge for China’s entrance into the Latin American market and for its cooperation with Latin American countries. Panama has a full realization of the importance of the Taiwan issue to China and will staunchly adhere to the one-China policy and well fulfill its commitments made in the communiqué on the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations without conducting any forms of official contacts and exchanges with Taiwan.

Before the consultation, the two Foreign Ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on establishing political consultation mechanism between the two Foreign Ministries. After the consultation, the two Foreign Ministers signed China-Panama visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders and jointly met the press.
