On September 4, 2016, President Xi Jinping met in Hangzhou with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia, who was in China for the G20 Hangzhou Summit.

Xi Jinping pointed out China pays high attention to developing China-Australia relations. It is hoped that both sides can meet each other half way, stick to the principle of mutual trust and mutual benefit, expand practical cooperation, and broaden people-to-people and cultural exchanges so as to push China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership for sound and stable development. Mutual trust is a precondition for the smooth development of bilateral relations. Both sides should respect each other's choice of development path, core interests and major concerns. The two countries can further complement each other with respective advantages, and continue to well implement the China-Australia free trade agreement. The two sides should accelerate the alignment of China's "Belt and Road" initiative with Australia's plan to develop its northern region, and actively expand cooperation in energy and resources, agriculture and husbandry, food processing, infrastructure construction and other areas to better realize mutual benefit and win-win results. China hopes Australia can continue to create an equitable, transparent and predictable policy environment for foreign investments, which will benefit Australia as well. China and Australia should further seek synergy in innovation-driven development strategies and expand joint research in food, farming, mineral, marine science and other areas. Exchanges in such areas as education, culture and tourism should be deepened so as to enhance mutual understanding and the friendship between the two peoples. Bilateral cooperation in anti-corruption, fugitive repatriation, asset recovery and anti-terrorism shall also be strengthened. China is willing to reinforce coordination and cooperation with Australia within the UN, the G20, the APEC, the East Asia Summit and other mechanisms.

Malcolm Turnbull noted that Australia enjoys a traditional friendship with China, and the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries receives wide support in Australia. The Australian side is committed to the active implementation of bilateral free trade agreement and is willing to deepen its economic and trade relations with China. Australia welcomes the investment from China and supports China in hosting a successful G20 Hangzhou Summit.
