On September 4, 2016, President Xi Jinping met in Hangzhou with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, who was attending the G20 Hangzhou Summit.

Xi Jinping stressed that at present, China-India relations maintain a sound momentum of healthy, stable and rapid development. As neighboring developing countries, China and India should maintain high-level exchanges, firmly grasp the general direction of the development of bilateral relations, give full play to dialogue mechanisms at various levels and in various areas, frequently exchange views on major issues of common interest, strengthen strategic communication and enhance mutual understanding and trust. The two countries should reinforce the docking of respective development strategies and planning, discuss to implement some tangible major projects in infrastructure construction, production capacity cooperation and other fields and continue to strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China will continue to encourage Chinese companies to invest and set up business in India. Both countries should respect and care for each other's concern, and handle differences in a constructive way. China is ready to make joint efforts with India to sustain the hard-won sound relations and push for continuous and new development of friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China is willing to deepen cooperation with India within the G20 framework, so as to jointly contribute more to world economic growth and global economic governance improvement. China supports India's efforts to host a successful 8th BRICS Summit and hopes India can make joint efforts with China to push the G20 Hangzhou Summit for positive outcomes.

Narendra Modi said that India-China strategic cooperative partnership is of great importance to the two countries, the region and the rest of the world. Both countries conduct close high-level exchanges, enjoy in-depth development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges and share consistent stances concerning international affairs. The 21st century is the century of Asia. Asian countries should join efforts to create stability and prosperity. India will coordinate with China for positive outcomes from the G20 Hangzhou Summit. He looks forward to President Xi Jinping's attendance at the upcoming 8th BRICS Summit in India.
