Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain

On September 5, 2016, President Xi Jinping met in Hangzhou with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain who was in China for the G20 Summit.

Xi Jinping pointed out that bilateral relations in recent years have maintained sound development momentum in general. Practical cooperation in various fields has been continuously deepened, which has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples. China is ready to work with Spain to elevate bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership to a higher level. The two sides should intensify high-level exchanges, and understand and help each other on issues concerning respective core interest. China appreciates Spain's active support to the “Belt and Road” construction and is willing to encourage its companies to invest and establish business in Spain. The two sides should continue to forge cooperation highlights in fields such as finance, telecommunication and renewable energy, and give play to complementary advantages to achieve mutual benefit and all-win results. Both sides should also expand trade scale by taking full advantage of the China-Europe cargo railway connecting Yiwu with Madrid and make full use of the China–Spain Forum to expand people-to-people and local exchanges. Both sides should strengthen communication and coordination in climate change, sustainable development and other major multilateral issues. China wishes and supports the stability and prosperity of the EU and expects Spain to play a positive role in promoting sound development momentum of China-EU relations.

Mariano Rajoy said that Spain speaks positively of the efforts of the Chinese government in tackling ongoing economic challenges and supports China to host a successful G20 Hangzhou Summit. Spain is willing to continue to maintain close exchanges and fully explore the potential in trade and investment with China while expanding culture and education exchanges.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
