On September 5, 2016, President Xi Jinping met in Hangzhou with UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who was in China for the G20 Summit.

Xi Jinping firstly congratulated Theresa May on assuming office as Prime Minister of the UK. Xi Jinping pointed out that as permanent members of the UN Security Council and important members of the G20 and other international mechanisms, China and the UK should strengthen cooperation, which not only brings benefits to the two peoples, but also is conducive to world peace and development. China is willing to work with the new UK government to constantly deepen political mutual trust and cooperation in various fields for the sake of more stable and better development of bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping stressed that the year 2016 marks the start of the "Golden Era" of China-UK relations, and 2017 will embrace the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between the two countries. China is willing to join efforts with the UK to lift China-UK global comprehensive strategic partnership in the 21st century to a higher level.

Xi Jinping emphasized that the two countries should maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, continue to ensure the success of high-level dialogue mechanisms and strengthen strategic communication and overall planning while continuously deepening mutual understanding and trust. Both sides should continue to advance practical cooperation in economy, trade, investment, energy, infrastructure construction, finance and other major areas, and expand cooperation in emerging areas including urbanization, high technology and clean energy. The two sides should deepen exchanges in such fields as culture, education, health, sports, youth, and media, actively discuss the establishment of a cooperation mechanism in law enforcement and continue to push forward cooperation in anti-corruption, fugitive repatriation and asset recovery. Cooperation on international hotspot issues and within frameworks including the UN, the G20 and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank should be strengthened as well. Both countries should enhance political mutual trust, expand common interests and properly deal with differences.

Theresa May congratulated China on successfully hosting the G20 Hangzhou Summit. She noted that the two countries are in the "Golden Era" for developing bilateral relations. There are extensive areas and great potential in UK-China cooperation. Committed to actively deepening UK-China comprehensive strategic partnership and enhancing mutual understanding and trust, the UK looks forward to intensifying cooperation with China in economy and trade, investment, finance, security, law enforcement and other fields.
