WHO: Sustained Local Transmission of COVID-19 Not Yet Seen Outside China

2020/02/19

On 18 February, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that except in specific circumstances like the Diamond Princess cruise ship, sustained local transmission of COVID-19 is not yet seen outside China.

Dr. Tedros pointed out that at the moment, WHO does not have enough data on cases outside China to make a meaningful comparison on the severity of disease or the case fatality rate. It is following up with countries to get more information about what happens about each case and the outcome. He reaffirmed the importance of all countries being ready for the arrival of the virus, to treat patients with dignity and compassion, to protect health workers and to prevent onward transmission.
