WHO: Containment of COVID-19 Must be Top Priority for All Countries

2020/03/05

On 4 March, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in Geneva that as the epidemic of COVID-19 is becoming increasingly complex, all countries must take the containment of COVID-19 as the top priority and prepare for sustained community transmission.

Dr. Tedros noted that although WHO has seen linked epidemics in several countries and signs of community transmission in some countries, most cases can still be traced to known contacts. WHO is advising countries on actions they can take for first case, first cluster, and first evidence of community transmission. He said that as different countries are in different scenarios, "there is no one-size fits all approach". However, WHO still suggests early, comprehensive and aggressive measures against the epidemic.

Dr. Tedros expressed WHO's concern that in some countries, the level of political will does not match the level of the threat they face. He stressed that every country needs political commitment to mobilizing the whole of government before cases even arrive and continuing to be aggressive when cases arrive.
