Beijing to be under Long-term Outbreak Control

2020/04/06

The outbreak control situation in Beijing, the capital city, remains serious and complex and we should not let our guard down, said Xu Hejian, Deputy Head of the Communication Department of the CPC Beijing Committee, Director of the Information Office and Spokesperson of the Beijing Municipal Government at a press briefing on Beijing's COVID-19 containment on 5 April.

Xu underscored two key aspects that merit attention in Beijing's containment work. First, the outbreak control will become a long-term normal. As the outbreak is spreading at a faster speed globally, Beijing cannot end its control efforts too soon, and the existing measures might need to remain in place for a rather long time. As the capital city of the country, Beijing faces a complex, long-term and arduous task of outbreak control. Given this long-term reality, we need to continue with the containment approach centering on preventing both case import and domestic resurgence, make accurate and science-based assessment of the evolving situation, and ensure targeted and rigorous response. Second, the window of opportunity must be seized. Despite some imported and sporadic cases, the spread of the virus nationwide, including in Beijing, has been effectively stemmed, and the disease can be controlled, treated and anticipated on the whole. While keeping the outbreak under effective control, it is imperative to sezie this window of opportunity to expedite the resumption of work, production and business, and restore normal life and production. We must not, and neither could we afford to miss out on it. In light of the situation on the ground, a series of tailored policies should be formulated for different places and at different stages with clear priorities to overcome difficulties and create favorable conditions for the resumption of production, work and business.
