MFA:China Welcomes and Will Participate in WHO's Global Collaboration Initiative

2020/05/07

On 6 May, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying expressed China's firm support for the leadership role of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the global response to COVID-19. She said that China welcomes WHO's global collaboration initiative to accelerate the development, production and equitable distribution of vaccines and drugs for COVID-19, and has decided to take part.

On 24 April, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the launch of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator by WHO and its global partners to accelerate the development, production and equitable distribution of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics for COVID-19.

Hua pointed out that as viruses respect no borders, people of all countries are entitled to equitable access to vaccines and drugs. From the very beginning, China has shared the genome of the novel coronavirus with other countries at the earliest opportunity, set up a platform to share data and research findings, and actively contributed to international cooperation and other countries' efforts to develop drugs and vaccines. As the most authoritative and professional international agency on global public health security, WHO plays an irreplaceable role in responding to the world's public health crises.

"China will work with the international community to safeguard global public health security and fight COVID-19 by promoting the development, production and equitable distribution of medical products for the disease," said Hua.
