NHC Update on COVID-19 Cases in China

1. Between 00:00 and 24:00, 16 May, the following were newly reported by the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps:

a) 5 confirmed cases (2 imported, 1 in Tianjin and 1 in Guangdong; 3 local cases, all in Jilin);

b) no fatal cases;

c) 2 suspected cases (both imported, 1 in Inner Mongolia and 1 in Shanghai);

d) 8 cured and discharged cases;

e) 633 close contacts released from medical observation; and

f) 1 fewer severe case.

2. As of 24:00, 16 May, among all the imported cases, 44 confirmed cases (including 3 severe cases) were still under treatment and 4 suspected cases awaiting test results. In total, 1,700 imported cases had been confirmed, 1,656 cases cured and discharged, and no fatal cases reported.

3. As of 24:00, 16 May, the following had been reported by the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps:

a) 86 confirmed cases (including 10 severe cases) still under treatment;

b) 78,227 cured and discharged cases;

c) 4,634 fatal cases (revised up by 1 in Jilin);

d) 82,947 confirmed cases (revised up by 1 in Jilin);

e) 4 suspected cases pending test results; and

f) 739,545 close contacts traced (including 4,724 still under medical observation).

4. Between 00:00 and 24:00, 16 May, the following asymptomatic cases were reported by the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps:

a) 12 new cases (1 imported);

b) no cases developed into confirmed cases;

c) 58 cases released from medical observation (1 imported); and

d) 515 cases still under medical observation (30 imported).

5. As of 24:00, 16 May, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan had altogether reported 1,537 confirmed cases:

a) 1,052 in the Hong Kong SAR (including 1,022 discharged cases and 4 fatal cases);

b) 45 in the Macao SAR (including 44 discharged cases); and

c) 440 in the Taiwan region (including 389 discharged cases and 7 fatal cases).
