CDC Expert: COVID-19 Under Control in Beijing

2020/06/19

At the 125th press conference on Beijing's COVID-19 response on the afternoon of 18 June, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control, confirmed that the virus has been brought under control in Beijing.

Wu said, "Newly reported cases are not necessarily new infections. In most cases, symptoms appeared several days ago. Given the time lapse between infection and onset, it can be concluded that the 21 new cases reported yesterday (17 June) had been infected before 12 June, and the curve of symptom onset peaked on 13 June."

"Does that mean there will be no new cases tomorrow? Not necessarily. But the new cases, if any, will be newly detected, existing infections, not new infections. And the number will further decline."
