MFA Spokesperson: Solidarity and Cooperation is the Most Powerful Weapon for Defeating COVID-19

2020/07/01

At the MFA Regular Press Conference on June 30, Spokesperson Zhao Lijian answered the following questions from Reuters: “We will soon pass the six-month milestone since the first cases of coronavirus were reported. What reflections does China have on its handling of the virus and the political situation that has arisen since? WHO has said it will send a team of investigators next week to investigate the origins of the virus. How does China take it?”

On the first question, Zhao said that the Chinese government has placed the highest importance on people’s life and health since the start of COVID-19, and adopted the most thorough, rigorous and comprehensive prevention and control measures. The whole nation came together to pull through this difficult period and made major strategic achievements in the fight. China has detailed its COVID-19 response with a clear timeline on many occasions and released the white paper Fighting COVID-19: China in Action, which comprehensively documented China’s efforts against the virus.

The Chinese government always puts the people and their lives front and center. To protect people’s life and health, China put on hold almost all economic and social activities nationwide and took decisive actions including quarantine and isolation. Following WHO’s professional recommendations, China adopted science-based measures to break the transmission routes and save lives at all costs. China’s COVID-19 response can stand the test of time and history.

China provided timely COVID-19 updates to WHO and relevant countries and regional organizations and shared the genome information of the novel coronavirus and its response experience with the rest of the world. China appreciates the valuable support from the international community, and it is now doing its best to reciprocate by providing supplies and sending medical teams to countries in need, and facilitating foreign countries’ purchase of anti-epidemic supplies.

The most important thing countries can learn from COVID-19 is that viruses are the common enemy of mankind. The only way to defeat them is to pull our strengths together. Solidarity and cooperation is the most powerful weapon against viruses. Having claimed so many precious lives, COVID-19 serves as a stark reminder that countries must rise above differences in geography, race, history, culture and social system, work together for a community with a shared future, and jointly preserve Planet Earth, the only home for humanity. As a responsible country, China will contribute its part toward that end.

On the second question, Zhao stated China’s consistent view that source tracing is a matter of science that should be left to scientists and medical experts. Since the start of COVID-19, China has maintained communication and cooperation with WHO on the origin of the virus. Chinese scientists are also in contact with their foreign colleagues on this matter. China will continue to support global research by scientists on the source and transmission routes of the virus.
