2020/07/03

At the MFA regular press briefing on 2 July, Spokesperson Zhao Lijian answered the following question: "On 1 July, the Security Council adopted a resolution on COVID-19, supporting the appeal for a global ceasefire proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and calling for enhanced humanitarian assistance. What is China's comment?"

Zhao said that China welcomes the unanimous adoption of the resolution on COVID-19 by the Security Council and voted for it. The resolution calls for support for the UN Secretary-General's global ceasefire appeal and points the way forward for humanitarian assistance, counter-terrorism and peacekeeping efforts in the context of COVID-19. The adoption of the resolution reflects the consensus of the Security Council members and UN member states on strengthening the role of the UN and its specialized agencies and on working together to combat the disease. It demonstrates the Security Council's ability to act and lead, and represents an important achievement of the Security Council and the UN and a victory for multilateralism.

The Security Council shoulders the primary responsibility for safeguarding international peace and security. At this critical juncture in the global fight against COVID-19, the Security Council is duty-bound to act on its mandate. China is glad to see that the Security Council has overcome resistance from a certain country and adopted the resolution.

China calls on all parties to act on the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind and promote multilateralism. It is necessary for all to work in solidarity to prevail over COVID-19, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and safeguard the UN-centered international system. China is ready to work with other parties to implement the Security Council resolution on COVID-19 and support the Security Council in continuing to play a positive role in accordance with its mandate.
