2020/12/23

On December 23, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng and 1st Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK Choi Jong Kun held a video meeting and exchanged views on China-ROK relations and issues of common concern.

Le Yucheng said that the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded with the major changes unseen in a century, has brought far-reaching implications to the development of mankind. The fundamental solution to address emerging global challenges is to build a community with a shared future for mankind. The international community needs to make joint efforts to contain the spread of the virus, promote the development and accessibility of COVID-19 vaccines, maintain the free trade system, and keep industrial and supply chains safe and open, in order to improve global governance and build a fairer and more reasonable international governance system.

Le Yucheng said that in face of the pandemic, China and the ROK stayed united and confronted the challenges all together. The two heads of state kept close communication by exchanging phone calls and messages on many occasions. The two countries took the initiative to undertake joint pandemic prevention and control and to establish "fast tracks" for personnel exchanges. The remarkable achievements of bilateral cooperation in various fields reflect the neighborly friendship of mutual assistance, and the high level of the strategic partnership between China and the ROK. The year 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK diplomatic relations, and the China-ROK Cultural Exchange Year will be launched in 2021 and 2022. Both sides need to further enhance exchanges and cooperation in pandemic response and various fields, draft the blueprint of the development of bilateral relations, and expand and enrich the relations between the two countries.

Le Yucheng said that common development of China and the ROK is the important driving force for further progress of bilateral relations. China is now fostering a new development paradigm with domestic circulation as the mainstay and domestic and international circulations reinforcing each other. China will open its door still wider to the world. We are willing to work with all countries including the ROK to expand common interests when opening up, embrace development opportunities in cooperation and pursue shared prosperity.

Choi Jong Kun made positive comments on the development of China-ROK relations and the outcomes of joint cooperation against the pandemic. He said that the ROK side also advocates the vision of a common community and upholds multilateralism and the free trade system. Before the pandemic is defeated by all countries, no country can stay out of it and keep itself safe alone. The international community needs to reinforce solidarity and cooperation, and make 2021 the "first year of defeating the virus". China is an important economy in the world, and the interests of the ROK and China are deeply integrated. He hopes that both countries will further deepen all-round exchanges and cooperation and move forward together for common development, in order to make greater contribution to improving global governance.
