The Foreign Ministry Holds Briefing on the Origins of the Novel Coronavirus with Envoys to China

2021/03/26

On March 26, 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a briefing with envoys to China on the joint scientific study on the origins of the novel coronavirus between China and the World Health Organization. The briefing was hosted by Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Foreign Ministry Yang Tao. Chinese expert from the China-WHO joint expert team Feng Zijian attended and provided detailed information about the background, process, findings and suggestions about future research of the China-WHO joint study, and answered envoys' questions. Over 100 envoys and diplomats from 50 countries, the African Union and the Arab League attended the event.

The Chinese side emphasized, the origin source-tracing of the novel coronavirus is a scientific issue, and it is to understand the animal origins and transmission route of the virus, help the current global anti-pandemic efforts, and prevent the virus from recurring. It should be done by scientists and their opinions should be respected. The cooperation between China and the WHO is joint scientific research, not the so-called "survey" of individual countries. Under the circumstances that China faces greater pressure on its own pandemic prevention and control, it is the first to carry out the cooperation with the WHO in the origin source-tracing, which is a positive contribution to the global anti-pandemic cause. China firmly opposes the "politicization" of the origin source-tracing by individual countries and groundless accusations and so-called accountability of other countries. This will not help global cooperation in the fight against the pandemic, but cause more loss of life. China is willing to continue to carry out pandemic prevention and control cooperation with the international community based on the principles of unity, cooperation, science, and justice, and implement the concept of a global community of health for all.
