Xi Jinping Meets with President Sauli Niinisto of Finland

On March 23, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with President Sauli Niinisto of Finland in the Netherlands.

Xi Jinping said, during your visit to China last April, we agreed to upgrade the China-Finland relations to a new type of cooperative partnership facing the future and make investment, environmental protection, innovation and urbanization the key areas of cooperation. Over the past year, new progress has been made in the cooperation, and the “Beautiful Beijing” environmental protection project and the FinChi Innovation Center are one of the highlights and models. We hope that the two sides will center on the new orientation of the bilateral relations to speed up negotiations on relevant political documents and better plan the cooperation in various fields. The two sides should work together to ensure the success of the events of the next year’s Helsinki Festival with China as the guest country of honour. Finland is an important EU member state. China is willing to join hands with Finland to advance the China-EU cooperation.

Sauli Niinisto said that led by the new type of Finland-China cooperative partnership, bilateral cooperation has made smooth progress. Finland hopes to reach an agreement with China on relevant political documents to push for the continuous development of the bilateral relationship. The Finnish side welcomes China’s active participation in the North Pole affairs and is willing to carry out cooperation with China. President Xi Jinping’s upcoming state visit to the EU headquarters is of historic importance and will bring new cooperation opportunities for Finland and Europe. Finland is willing to actively push forward the development of EU-China relations.

Both sides also had an exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine.
