2014/03/27

On March 26 local time, President Xi Jinping visited the Charles de Gaulle Foundation in Paris.

Accompanied by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and Minister of National Education Vincent Peillon, Xi Jinping arrived at Charles de Gaulle Foundation and visited the office of General Charles de Gaulle. The executives of the Foundation briefed on the working moments of General Charles de Gaulle in those days. Xi Jinping laid a wreath at the bronze statue of General Charles de Gaulle and wrote "Paying Tribute to the Great Man and Composing a New Chapter in Chinese and French History" on the guest book.

Xi Jinping then met with representatives of French friends who are committed to China-France friendship.

Xi Jinping said in his remarks, it was the far-sighted decision made by Chairman Mao Zedong and General Charles de Gaulle 50 years ago that brought China and France together, ushering in a new era of China-France relations. On the special occasion with historic significance of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between our two countries this year, we admire even more their great wisdom and courage that go beyond the times. The offspring of General Charles de Gaulle and the Foundation have continued the cause of General Charles de Gaulle and are working hard to promote China-France friendship. Arduous efforts from many people bring the friendship between China and France to the splendid blossom. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I hereby extend my heartfelt thanks to your contributions.

Xi Jinping pointed out, "at the age of 50, one knows the destiny." Proceeding through the past fifty years, China and France have known where the bilateral relations should go and how it will go. Remembering the history is to create a better future. It is hoped that all friends could continue your positive efforts to the promotion of China-France relations, and that more people could join you, so as to pass on the flame of China-France friendship from generation to generation.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were in company during the visit.

In the afternoon the same day, accompanied by Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Marisol Touraine, Health Minister of France, Mme. Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping, visited the Necker Children's Hospital in downtown Paris

Listening to the introduction of the latest achievements on research of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment by the French renowned experts, Peng Liyuan said, since serving as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in 2011, I have paid more attention to the prevention and treatment of these two diseases. I will, as always, do my utmost to actively participate in the promotion and popularization on the relevant work of prevention and treatment, especially care for the child patients.

Peng Liyuan went to the wards to see the child patients. She came to a child named Mossout, presented him a toy panda, and wished him an early recovery.

Established in 1778, the Necker Children's Hospital is the first children's hospital in the world. It is specialized in the research and treatment of children’s infectious diseases, rare diseases, and chronic diseases.
