2014/07/17

On July 16 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Michelle Bachelet of Chile in Brasilia.

Xi Jinping said that China and Chile are strategic partners of each other, and the bilateral relations enjoy broad prospects under the new situation. I am willing to keep in touch with President Bachelet, attach importance to and promote the development of the China-Chile relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and deepen practical cooperation by focusing on respective development plans. Both sides should start the China-Chile intergovernmental standing committee at an early date, formulate joint action plans, effectively build the China-Chile free trade zone, promote trade growth and structural diversification, strengthen cooperation in fields such as mining, agriculture, clean energy, finance, investment, science, technology and connectivity, and actively carry out exchanges in culture, education, tourism and between local governments. Both sides should strengthen coordination and cooperation within frameworks such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

Xi Jinping appreciated Chile for its important contributions to promoting the overall China-Latin America cooperation, and hoped that Chile will continue to exert a positive influence on promoting the China-Latin America relations.

Bachelet said that Chile is advancing its reform and development, and strengthening cooperation with China is a priority in Chile’s diplomacy. Chile hopes to keep close exchanges with China, strengthen communication and mutual learning, and deepen cooperation in fields such as economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural engagement and education. Chile welcomes Chinese enterprises to actively participate in Chile’s infrastructure construction and promote the connectivity in South America. Chile is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in the UN and the Antarctic affairs, and jointly cope with the various global challenges. He is looking forward to visiting China and attending the APEC Informal Leaders’ Meeting this November so as to further promote the bilateral cooperation and the Asia-Pacific regional integration. Chile supports Latin America and China to conduct closer cooperation.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others attended the meeting.
