On May 20, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguin at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said, in February this year, President Guillermo Lasso attended the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 and paid a successful visit to China, during which the two heads of state reached important consensus on the development of bilateral relations. China and Ecuador share extensive common interests, and the bilateral cooperation, which embodies South-South cooperation featuring mutual respect, mutual assistance and mutual support, has yielded important outcomes and has a bright prospect. As Ecuador is about to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the victory of its war of independence, China believes that Ecuador will continuously make more achievements on the new development path.

Wang Yi said, the two sides should cement political mutual trust, strengthen coordination and collaboration, continue to view the development of bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and strengthen mutual support on issues of respective core interests. China thanks Ecuador for consistently adhering to the one-China principle and supporting China in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and development interests. The two sides should strengthen coordination and collaboration in the multilateral arena, defend true multilateralism and join hands to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi said, China is ready to work with Ecuador to continue to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, actively negotiate and conclude a plan for Belt and Road cooperation, and jointly foster new growth drivers such as a health Silk Road, a digital Silk Road and a green Silk Road, and upgrade practical cooperation between the two countries, so as to better benefit the two peoples.

Holguin said, the amicable relations between Ecuador and China have been rooted in the two peoples and will not be shaken by any international force. Ecuador attaches great importance to developing relations with China, and firmly supports the one-China principle. Ecuador is ready to work with China to strengthen strategic communication, consolidate political mutual trust and push forward the Ecuador-China comprehensive strategic partnership in a positive direction. Ecuador thanks China for its strong support to Ecuador in fields such as pandemic response, healthcare, and infrastructure construction, and stands ready to work with China to further deepen Belt and Road cooperation, speed up the negotiations on a free trade agreement, and enrich the connotations of bilateral pragmatic cooperation in various fields.
