Ambassador Zhang Jianwei has recently given an exclusive interview with Al-Arab, an electronic media organization in Kuwait, on the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress, the outcomes of the first China-Arab States Summit and the China-GCC Summit, and China-Kuwait relationship. The exclusive interview was released on December 25 on social media platforms including Twitter and YouTube. A short video on this interview has received over a million views on Twitter by December 26.

During the interview, Ambassador Zhang noted that the 20th CPC National Congress confirmed that China will remain committed to promoting world peace and development, building a community with a shared future for mankind and deepening and expanding global partnerships characterized by equality, openness and cooperation, and that China will bring new opportunities to the rest of the world through its new development. Against this backdrop, President Xi Jinping attended the first China-Arab States Summit, which was China’s highest-level diplomatic engagement with the Arab world on the largest-scale since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). During the summit, the two sides issued three important documents, namely Riyadh Declaration of the First China-Arab States Summit, Outline of the Comprehensive Cooperation Plan Between the People’s Republic of China and Arab States and a document on deepening the Sino-Arab strategic partnership for peace and development, and agreed to build a China-Arab community with a shared future in the new era. This will open up broad prospects of China-Arab cooperation in various fields. President Xi Jinping also attended and addressed the first China-GCC Summit. He expounded on how to establish and strengthen China-GCC strategic partnership from perspectives of solidarity, development, security and cultural prosperity, saying that in the upcoming three to five years, cooperation between China and GCC countries will be conducted in five priority areas which are energy, finance and investment, innovation and sci-technology, aerospace, and language and culture. His remarks have far-reaching significance for future development of China-GCC relations.

Ambassador Zhang also looked back at the history of friendly exchanges between China and Kuwait, and envisioned the promising future of bilateral relations. He said that Kuwait was the first Arab country in the Gulf to establish diplomatic relations with China, adding that in the ensuing 51 years, we have made stable progress in our relationship, deepened our political mutual trust, and achieved fruitful outcomes through our practical cooperation. Common understandings reached by President Xi Jinping and Crown Prince Mishal during their meeting will chart the course of future development of our relations. Speaking of cultural exchanges between the two sides, Ambassador Zhang pointed out that the first Chinese culture center in the Gulf region is under construction, and once completed, will serve as a major platform to display the fine tradition of Chinese culture among the people of Kuwait in a way that will keep people-to-people ties closer. As President Xi Jinping proposed at the China-GCC Summit nurturing new highlights in language and cultural cooperation with GCC countries, China will cooperate with 300 universities, middle and primary schools in GCC countries on Chinese language education, work with GCC countries to set up 300 Chinese language smart classrooms, provide 3,000 “Chinese Bridge” summer/winter camp opportunities, and set up Chinese language learning and testing centers and online Chinese classes. The two sides could hold a China-GCC language and culture forum, and compile a bilingual library for people-to-people and cultural exchanges and mutual learning. This will be conducive to promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and enhancing mutual understanding and traditional friendship between the two peoples.
