Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister Attend "Happy Spring Festival-China-Sri Lanka Gala" Organized by Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka

On January 17, 2014, the "Happy Spring Festival-China-Sri Lanka Gala" jointly sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and Chamber of Commerce of China-funded Enterprises, was successfully held in the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo. Some political heavyweights were present, such as Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Minister of External Affairs G. L. Peiris, General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena, Chief of the Defense Staff Jagath Jayasuriya, and Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Jayanath Colombage. More than 1,000 people, including the overseas Chinese in Sri Lanka and friends from all circles in Sri Lanka, attended the event.

Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wu Jianghao delivered a speech, extending New Year greetings to all the overseas Chinese in Sri Lanka. Wu Jianghao said that the year of 2013 witnessed the frequent high-level exchanges between China and Sri Lanka, the promotion of the bilateral relations to a strategic cooperative partnership and the fruitful achievements of pragmatic cooperation. In 2014, the China-Sri Lanka relations are at a new historical starting point. China is ready to work with Sri Lanka to push the bilateral relations to greater development.

Secretary to the Sri Lankan President Lalith Weeratunga read the congratulatory message of the President. On behalf of the Sri Lankan government and people, President Mahinda Rajapaksa extended his New Year greetings in the congratulatory message to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government and people. He said that Sri Lanka and China have been strategic cooperative partners. Sri Lanka is very pleased to see the tremendous achievements China has made, wishes China more vitality in the upcoming Year of the Horse, and believes that the Sri Lanka-China relations will be further consolidated and developed in the new year.

An awarding ceremony was held prior to the gala. Ambassador Wu Jianghao, Minister of External Affairs Peiris and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga awarded prizes to the "Five Excellent Construction Projects of China-funded Enterprises", the "Top Ten Sri Lankan Cooperative Partners" and the "Top Ten Excellent Sri Lankan Employees". President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne had group photos with the award winners. Later, staff of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and China-funded enterprises and the Sri Lankan friends presented colorful art performance of various forms including singing, folk dancing, martial arts, and instrumental performance. Performances such as the "Flying Song for Mother Earth", "Thousand-Hand Guan Yin", "Love My China" and "Mother Sri Lanka" brought the gathering to climax one after another, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere full of festive joy. The Sri Lankan National Television and major print media conducted extensive report on the gala.
