'The Future of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' Seminar Held in Jakarta

On October 9, the China Studies Center in Indonesia held the 'Future of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' Seminar in Santika Hotel, Jakarta. Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr. Marty Natalegawa, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Xie Feng, Executive Director of the CSIS Dr. Rizal Sukma, Vice President of the China Public Diplomacy Association Ambassador Ma Zhengang, former Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Mr. Wang Chungui attended the seminar and delivered speeches. Nearly 70 representatives from Chinese and Indonesian governments, businesses, universities, think tanks, media and diplomatic missions in Indonesia were in attendance.

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa delivered a keynote speech. He said that the China-Indonesia relationship is in the best period in history, the bilateral relations have gone far beyond the bilateral scope and increasingly gained far-reaching regional influence. Last year, the top leaders of China and Indonesia reached agreement on building a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. It reflected that the Indonesian government attaches great importance to the development of China-Indonesia relations. The Indonesian side looks forward to working together with China and other parties at the upcoming APEC summit, the East Asia Leaders' Meetings and the G20 summit to ensure positive outcomes.

Dr. Sukma said that Indonesia's relations with China are facing a good opportunity for development. Building the comprehensive strategic partnership has laid a solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations. Indonesia and China are both developing countries. Their comparative advantages are complementary and development strategies match each other. Currently, Indonesia and China have entered a new stage of development. Indonesia's 'maritime axis' strategy and China's '21st Century Maritime Silk Road' initiative have a lot in common. The maritime cooperation is expected to become an important area of bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Xie pointed out that the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Indonesia is a political decision made by Chinese and Indonesian leaders from ​​a strategic height and long-term perspective. It's of far-reaching historical significance for the development of bilateral relations, and has pointed the clear direction for the development of bilateral relations. Ambassador Xie described the development trend of this comprehensive strategic partnership, important features and rich substance. He proposed promoting the development of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership under the new circumstances, by coordinating development strategies, expanding common interests, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and deepening people-to-people exchanges. He recalled the past four months' experience since taking office and hoped to visit more places in Indonesia during his tenure, to reach out to more people and do more practical things for the people of both countries. He hoped to set up more bridges between the two countries and work together with the Indonesian side to contribute more to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Ambassador Ma Zhengang said to achieve prosperity, stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region, countries need to work together in the region. China is the largest developing country and Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia. Bilateral friendly cooperation between the two countries is important for promoting East Asian cooperation and for achieving peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The "China Dream" and the "Indonesia Dream" are interconnected and the two countries' development strategies are highly complementary in the new period. The China-Indonesia win-win cooperation has huge potential and broad prospects, and will bring more benefits to the two peoples.

Ambassador Wang Chungui pointed out that China will continue to pursue 'amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness' in its neighborhood diplomacy, and seek good neighborly relations and partnerships to achieve common development. China attaches great importance to Indonesia, which has important influence in the region. China is willing to join hands with Indonesia to deepen coordination and cooperation at the bilateral, regional and international levels.

The participants had in-depth discussions on enriching the China-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership, deepening economic cooperation and promoting people-to-people exchanges. They agreed that the development of China-Indonesia relations has broad prospect and that the two sides will work together to achieve greater progress in bilateral relations.
