Chinese Embassy in Zambia Holds the First Award Ceremony of Chinese Ambassador's Award of Friendship

On November 18, 2015, Chinese Embassy in Zambia held the first award ceremony of Chinese Ambassador's Award of Friendship in Lusaka. Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, H.E. Mr. Yang Youming and his wife Mme. Geng Hailing, Mrs. Cheswa Kaunda, daughter of the First Republican President and representative of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, the Fourth Republican President of Zambia H.E. Mr. Rupiah Banda, Hon. Mr. Given Lubinda, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Rayford Mbulu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Panji Kaunda, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Sydney Mushanga, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Hon. John Kufuna, Deputy Minister of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, government officials from various departments, Ambassadors and High Commissioners of other African countries in Zambia, representatives from various sectors of Zambia including political parties, armed forces, businesses, media institutions, civil society organizations, and representatives from the Chinese community in Zambia, over 300 in total, attended the function.

   

Congratulating all the awardees in his speech, Ambassador Yang spoke highly of the unbreakable friendship forged by the two governments and peoples since China and Zambia established diplomatic ties in 1964. He said that, since 1964, numerous eminent figures had dedicated themselves in the great cause of China-Zambia friendship and made remarkable contribution to carrying forward the friendship. The purpose of the Chinese Ambassador's Award is to show the heartfelt gratitude to those who have laid a solid foundation for China-Zambian friendship. He said today, economic and trade relations between China and Zambia are growing rapidly, with the areas of cooperation ever expanding and cultural exchanges more frequent, and the peoples of the two countries both benefit greatly. China and Africa have always been a community of shared destiny and the common aspiration for development brings the two sides together tightly. It is China's sincere hope that Africa would develop stronger, and China is willing to provide its support for the development in Africa and strengthen the bilateral cooperation in various fields with Africa including Zambia, to pursue common development and create a better future. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation(FOCAC) Johannesburg Summit will be held in early December, which will set new targets for China-Africa cooperation in the future and usher in a new age of China-Africa relations. Ambassador Yang assured the guests that Chinese Embassy will continue to hold award presentations for the Chinese Ambassador's Award of Friendship in the future and expressed his hope that more people would devote themselves to the friendship between the two countries and peoples so as to make the tree of friendship between China and Zambia ever green.

   

His Honorable Mr. Mbulu gave his remarks on behalf of the Zambian government and said he was happy to be present at the ceremony which is a vivid embodiment of the profound friendship between Zambia and China. He spoke highly of the Zambia-China all-weather friendship founded by the older generation of leaders from both countries, Dr. Keneth Kaunda on the Zambian side and Chairman Mao Zedong on the Chinese side, and said that the Zambian government and people are satisfied with the results achieved by the bilateral practical cooperation in various fields and sincerely grateful to China for the long-term support rendered to the socio-economic development of Zambia. H.E. President Edgar Lungu attaches great importance to the relations with China, and the Zambian government is committed to further promoting the bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation with China so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples.

   

Ambassador Yang and Mr. Mbulu presented the awards together to the awardees. While delivering their remarks, all the awardees recounted their experience in promoting China-Zambia friendship and the mutual understanding of the two peoples, said that China-Zambia friendship is a great cause and expressed their hope that the young generation could further carry forward the friendship founded by the older generation of leaders from both countries and bring more benefits to the two peoples. Artists from both China and Zambia staged brilliant art performances and pushed the atmosphere of the function to its climax time and again.

   

To carry forward the all-weather friendship between China and Zambia and to further consolidate public support for bilateral friendship, the Chinese Embassy in Zambia decided to set up the Chinese Ambassador's Award of Friendship from this year to honor those eminent figures from both China and Zambia who have played an instrumental role and made great contribution to the promotion of China-Zambia friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples. The award ceremony is the first of its kind, with H.E. Dr. KK won the Life-time Achievement Award, H.E. Mr. Rupiah Banda, Mr. Vernon Mwaanga, former Foreign Minister of Zambia, Mr. Mark Chona, former special assistant to Dr. KK, Mr. Tao Xinghu, Deputy General Manager of China Non-ferrous Metal Corporation(CNMC) and Mrs. Li Li, former General Manger of Johnken Farm (Zambia) won the Remarkable Contribution Award, and Chinese Medical Team won the Excellent Group Award.
