In the evening of June 26, 2020, Ambassador Yan Xiusheng attended the virtual panel discussion on "Globalisation After Covid-19: the Role of the ABCF" held by the Association for Barbados-China Friendship (ABCF). The panel was moderated by Dr. Delisle Worrell, President of the ABCF. 35 participants joined the event including H.E. Francois Jackman, Ambassador of Barbados to the People's Republic of China, Dr. Chelston Brathwaite, Former Ambassador of Barbados to the People's Republic of China, Dr. Che Leon Corbin, President of the Barbados China Returned Scholars Association and Mr. Albert Christopher Lee, the Public Relations Officer of the Chinese Association of Barbados together as the panelists.

Ambassador Yan extended his heartiest congratulations on the first anniversary of the Association last month and the achievements the Association has already made during the past year.

Yan quoted that, H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, stressed in his written message to the High-level Video Conference on Belt and Road International Cooperation which was held recently, that Covid-19 has made many things clear to mankind. For one thing, all nations have their destinies closely connected, and humanity is in fact a community with a shared future. Be it in taming the virus or in achieving economic recovery, humanity cannot succeed without solidarity, cooperation and multilateralism. The right approach to tackling global crises and realizing long-term development is through greater connectivity, openness and inclusiveness. It is in this spirit of solidarity and cooperation that China and Barbados have enhanced their friendship during the pandemic period. Earlier this year, H.E, President Xi Jinping and the Hon. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley wrote to each other, showing their solidarity to fight together against the virus. China has mobilized the most needed medical supplies to Barbados, and invited the top Chinese front line medical experts from Chongqing to share their know-how and experience with their Barbadian peers. Yan also said, People-to-people bond is the foundation for two countries' diplomatic relations, and one of the best ways to enhance the countries' level partnership is through personal relationships. He encouraged the ABCF to continue to work to enhance the mutual understanding, cultural exchanges and people-to-people bonds between the two countries in the future. He also suggested the Association to help Barbadian people to understand China better, engage in the bilateral exchanges, enhance relations with the CPAFFC, and cooperate with other China-related associations in Barbados, making more contributions to China-Barbados friendship.

Dr. Worrell thanked the intervention made by Ambassador Yan and said, the epidemic make it clear that all nations have their destinies closely connected, and Barbados expect to enhance bilateral relations and expand commercial links with China. And bilateral and commercial relationships are built on trust, and the efficient way to build trust is through personal relationships. In this regard, the mission of the ABCF is more vital than ever today. The ABCF will continues to devote itself to create avenues and opportunities, for Barbadians and Chinese to deepen our understanding and partnership.

Panelists discussed China-Barbados cooperation in commerce, travel and education areas as well as globalization and other topics. Ambassador Yan also made brief introduction about the national security legislation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in China.
