The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lodges Stern Representations Against Japan's Participation in the Erroneous Taiwan-related Statement by G7

On August 4, 2022, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Deng Li was instructed to summon Japanese Ambassador to China Tarumi Hideo for an emergency meeting, and lodged stern representations with the Japanese side against the erroneous Taiwan-related statement by G7 foreign ministers and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Deng Li said that Japan, in collusion with the other G7 members and the EU, issued an erroneous Taiwan-related statement that confounded black and white, blamed the innocent party, in an attempt to justify the United States' erroneous behavior of conniving at Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and violating China's sovereignty, made unwarranted accusations against and smeared China, and grossly interfered in China's internal affairs. It seriously violated the basic norms governing international relations and the principles set out in the four political documents between China and Japan, and sent a seriously wrong signal to the international community, which is extremely egregious in nature, and has seriously adverse impact. China firmly rejects and strongly condemns this.

Deng Li pointed out that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China and its historical ins and outs are crystal clear, so are the facts and status quo that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China. In disregard of China's strong opposition, Pelosi visited China's Taiwan region. It is a serious violation of the one-China principle and a serious infringement upon China's sovereignty, which has outraged the Chinese people and triggered widespread opposition from the international community. It is reasonable, lawful, legitimate and justified for the Chinese government to take countermeasures to uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity and oppose secession. Opposing secession and achieving the reunification of the motherland is the shared will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity, patience and efforts, but we will also prevent the country from splitting by all means, at any cost, and with the strongest determination.

Deng Li stressed that the Taiwan question concerns the political foundation of China-Japan relations and the basic trust between the two countries. Japan, which colonized Taiwan for a long time, bears inescapable and serious historical responsibility for the Taiwan question and should be more cautious in words and deeds. China strongly urges Japan to abide by the principles set out in the four political documents between China and Japan and its political commitments on the Taiwan question, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, and stop going further down the wrong path.
