Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong Attends the Series of Senior Officials' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation

On July 30, 2019, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Three (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK)) Senior Officials' Meeting (APT SOM) and East Asia Summit Senior Officials' Meeting (EAS SOM) were held in Bangkok, Thailand. These meetings aim to make preparations for the upcoming Foreign Ministers' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation. Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong led a delegation to the meetings.

At the APT SOM, Chen Xiaodong noted, all parties should firmly uphold multilateralism and free trade, push for the conclusion of negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership within this year, and actively explore the path of building the East Asian economic community. The Chinese side is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the ASEAN, Japan and the ROK and constantly advance practical cooperation in various fields to ensure the complete success of the Foreign Ministers' Meetings and the leaders' meetings at the end of this year.

  

At the EAS SOM, Chen Xiaodong expressed, the summit should remain committed to promoting the balanced development of economic, social and political security. The Chinese side attaches great importance to the implementation of the Manila Plan of Action to Advance the Phnom Penh Declaration on the East Asia Summit Development Initiative (2018-2022). China will host eight projects including a new energy forum this year. It is hoped that the summit will actively carry out practical cooperation to better benefit the people in the region.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong also met with senior officials from other countries present at the meetings, exchanging views on East Asia cooperation, bilateral relations and topics of common interest.
