Le Yucheng: Scientific and Technological Revolution is Rewriting the History of Humanity

2019/10/24

At the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations Forum 2019, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng pointed out in his speech that scientific and technological advances are profoundly changing the whole world. The world was small, as we used to say. Today, the Internet has made it flat by connecting people across the globe. The chip revolution has made the world move faster because many complex things can be done with a single click. The advent of artificial intelligence has made the world smarter, and even human brains may be replaced. The fourth industrial revolution, represented by artificial intelligence and big data, has generated many new industries and business forms and models. What has happened is rewriting the history of humanity, reshaping the global economic structure, and bringing dramatic changes to the way people live and work.

While bringing about a bright future, scientific and technological advances have also generated many unknowns. Scientific development entwined with political and security issues has led to increasingly fierce competition over ideas and standards. It is impacting as never before the future of every country and the evolution of the international order and landscape.
