China and India Hold the 16th Meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs

On July 10, 2020, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs Naveen Srivastava of India co-chaired via videolink the 16th Meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs. Representatives from the both countries' authorities of foreign affairs, national defense and immigration were present. The two sides had candid and in-depth exchanges of views on the recent situation in the border areas of the two countries, and made positive progress in relaxation of the regional situation.

Both sides expressed that they will earnestly implement the important consensus reached by foreign ministers and the special representatives on China-India boundary question, continue to resolve relevant issues properly, jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in border areas and uphold overall bilateral relations. Both sides fully recognized the consensus reached in the commander-level talks between Chinese and Indian border troops and the positive progress in relaxation of the current regional situation. They also agreed to continue to maintain dialogue and communication through military and diplomatic channels, further cool down the situation, improve and strengthen confidence-building measures in border areas, properly handle border-related issues in a timely fashion, and avoid an escalation from differences to disputes.
