China and Japan Hold the Dialogue Between the Heads of the Delegations of High-level Consultations on Maritime Affairs

On June 23, 2022, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Takehiro Funakoshi co-chaired the dialogue between the heads of the delegations of China-Japan high-level consultations on maritime affairs via video link.

The two sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on maritime affairs and stressed that the two sides should follow the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and the spirit of the four-point principled consensus, properly handle maritime conflicts and disputes between the two countries, strengthen control of maritime and air risks, actively promote practical cooperation in marine ecology, environmental protection, scientific research, meteorology, disaster mitigation and prevention, search and rescue, fisheries and other ocean-related areas, strengthen personnel exchanges between the maritime departments of the two sides, maintain peace and stability in the East China Sea, and make active efforts to make the East China Sea a sea of peace, cooperation and friendship. China stated its solemn position on the issues of the East China Sea, the Diaoyu Islands and the South China Sea, and urged the Japanese side to respect China's territorial sovereignty and security concerns, be prudent in words and deeds and avoid taking any actions that may complicate the situation. China also reiterated its concern over the disposal of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water in Japan, and asked Japan to properly handle it.

The two sides agreed to hold a new round of China-Japan high-level consultations on maritime affairs this year.
