On 5 April 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming met with US Special Representative for the DPRK Sung Kim in Washington, DC. The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Liu Xiaoming underscored that China is committed to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, to achieving denuclearization of the Peninsula, and to resolving the Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation. China is concerned over the current situation and does not want to see escalation of tension or see any party take actions that aggravate tension. The situation on the Peninsula has come to what it is today for a reason, and the legitimate and reasonable concerns of the DPRK should be taken seriously and addressed. China will continue to work with relevant parties to push forward the process of political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

Sung Kim noted that the US has no hostile intent toward the DPRK, is committed to peacefully resolving the Peninsula issue through diplomacy and agrees with the “action for action” principle. The US side is willing to resume talks with the DPRK at an early date to discuss all concerns of the DPRK, including sanction relief. The US will stay in communication and cooperation with China in this regard.
