China and Australia Exchanges Views on South Pacific Affairs

2022-05-09 18:07

On May 6, 2022, a responsible official of the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry exchanged views with an official of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on South Pacific affairs via video link.

The Chinese side expresses its solemn position on security cooperation between China and Solomon Islands, pointing out that bilateral security cooperation is normal cooperation between two sovereign states, based on the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, and in line with international law and practice. Relevant cooperation aims to help Solomon Islands maintain domestic stability and social security, which is in the common interests of countries in the region, and does not involve or target third parties. It proceeds in parallel with and is not in conflict with the existing regional security cooperation arrangements. Solomon Islands and South Pacific islands are not the "backyard" of any country. China is a direct stakeholder in the security of the South Pacific region. China has no selfish interests in the South Pacific, does not seek "spheres of influence" or engage in bullying and coercion, and will unswervingly advance practical cooperation with South Pacific island countries in various fields.

The two sides also exchanged views on respective policies towards the South Pacific island countries, pandemic response and economic recovery, fisheries and oceans, infrastructure construction, climate change response, disaster prevention and mitigation and other South Pacific issues.
