On June 26, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Beijing with Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) Jacob J. Lew, Vice Chair Evan G. Greenberg, and President Stephen A. Orlins.

Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping pointed out that the people are the foundation of China-U.S. relations, and “we count on the American people, and hope for lasting friendship between the two peoples”. The NCUSCR has played a constructive role in promoting mutual understanding between the people of the two countries for a long time. Wang Yi expressed his hope that under the current circumstances, the NCUSCR will continue to stabilize the China-U.S. relationship from deterioration, advance friendly exchanges and disseminate true stories of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wang Yi emphasized that the root cause of difficulties facing the China-U.S. relationship is that the U.S. perception and views of China are seriously distorted, and a series of wrong measures against China have been taken. This is not in alignment with the trend of development and progress of the times, and is also in violation of the expectations of the international community. China’s policy towards the United States maintains consistency and stability, and always follows the principle of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by President Xi Jinping. The U.S. side should earnestly respect China’s legitimate rights to development, abide by the one-China principle, safeguard the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, take real actions to implement the common understandings reached between the two presidents in Bali, deliver on the promises made by the U.S. multiple times, and work with China in the same direction to steer China-U.S. relations towards steady and sound development.

Jacob J. Lew, among others, said that the U.S. and China are interdependent, and “decoupling” does not work. The NCUSCR supports the two countries in maintaining open lines of communication in various fields, and will continue to be committed to advancing dialogue and exchanges between the two sides in a candid manner to promote the development of U.S.-China relations towards a positive direction.
