On July 18, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that the world needs a stable China-U.S. relationship. President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden had a successful meeting in Bali, Indonesia last November, and reached important common understandings. The two sides should earnestly implement these common understandings, jointly remove disturbances, and bring China-U.S. relations back to the track of sound development.

Wang Yi pointed out that China is committed to the path of green, low-carbon and sustainable development under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, actively engages in international cooperation on climate response, and works to promote the building of a clean and beautiful world with the goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind. China is ready to strengthen dialogue and communication with the United States, explore mutually beneficial cooperation, and jointly cope with climate change. China-U.S. cooperation on climate response enjoys huge potential, and it cannot be achieved without the understanding and support of the two peoples, nor can it be separated from the overall environment of China-U.S. relations. China hopes that the United States will adopt a rational, pragmatic and positive policy toward China, continue to adhere to the one-China principle, properly handle the Taiwan question, and work with China to manage bilateral relations in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful co-existence and win-win cooperation.

John Kerry said that the United States attaches importance to stabilizing its relations with China, and hopes to work with China to promote further improvement of bilateral relations to the benefit of the world. The United States always sticks to the one-China policy, and stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China in the spirit of mutual respect, properly handle differences between the two countries, and jointly respond to climate change and other global challenges.
