On the afternoon of June 19, 2003, Chairman Wu Bangguo of China's National People's Congress (NPC) met with Comoros President Azali Assoumani at the Great Hall of the People.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Hu said that the complex changes in international situations had provided developing countries including China with new challenges and opportunities. He acknowledged that China would further increase its friendship and cooperation with Comoros to promote the continuous and steady progress of bilateral relations in the new century.

Wu briefed Azali on China?s national situation featuring a large population and unbalanced economic development, as well as the legislation and monitoring work of NPC and its standing committee. He pointed out that NPC had always maintained friendly exchanges with the Comoros parliament and was expecting to establish brand new friendly cooperative relations with the new Comoros parliament to make contribution to the overall development of the China-Comoros relations.

President Azali spoke highly of the rapid growth of the relations between the two countries over the past 28 years of bilateral diplomatic relations, and said the Comoro people treasured the friendship with the Chinese people as China was the first to recognize the independence of Comoros and had offered assistance and support ever since.
