Foiling Taiwan's Attempt to Participate in the United Nations

2000-11-15 14:16
Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China since ancient times. The question of Taiwan is China's internal affairs which can only be resolved by the Chinese people themselves. Bringing to an end the separation across the two straits and accomplishing the great cause of reunification of the motherland is the earnest desire and unshakable determination of the entire Chinese people including our fellow compatriots in Taiwan, as well as an irresistible trend of history.

At the instigation of the Taiwan authorities, a small number of countries has in recent years asked to list the question of the so-called Taiwan's participation in the United Nations into the agenda of the UN General Assembly. Turning things upside down and distorting facts, they have brazenly endeavored to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the UN. This not only constitutes a gross violation of China's sovereignty and a crude interference in China's internal affairs, but also a flagrant trampling on the UN Charter and Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly. The Chinese Government and people have strongly condemned and are firmly opposed to it. The vast majority of the UN member countries have also voiced their unequivocal opposition to it.

Since the 48th UN General Assembly, the successive General Committees of the UN General Assembly have rejected the attempt to list the question of the so-called Taiwan's participation in the UN into the agenda of the UN General Assembly.

On September 15, 2001, the General Committee of the 56th UN General Assembly once again rejected the proposal by a small number of countries for listing the question of the so-called Taiwan's participation in the UN into the agenda of the 56th UN General Assembly. During the deliberations of the General Committee, 67 countries expressed unequivocal opposition in their statements to list the question of the so-called Taiwan's participation in the UN into the agenda of the Assembly, thereby forming an overwhelming majority. Accordingly, the Acting President of the General Committee ruled not to list the question into the agenda of the Assembly, thus for the 9th time foiling Taiwan's attempt to participate in the UN. This fully demonstrated the resolute stand of the overwhelming majority of the UN member countries to defend the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, safeguard Resolution 2578 of the UN General Assembly and adhere to the principle of one China. Facts have once again shown that the Taiwan authorities attempt to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the UN is unpopular and will get nowhere.
