2004-11-30 00:00

On November 29, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao sent a telegraph of congratulations to the Conference to Memorize the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People held in the UN New York Headquarter. The full text of the telegraph is as follows:

On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to extend warm congratulations to the conference.

I would like to take this opportunity to express deep grief on the passing of Chairman Arafat not long ago and sincere condolence to the Palestinian government and people. Chairman Arafat is an outstanding leader and statesman of Palestine and the founder and active impellor of China-Palestine relations. His death means not only a loss to the Palestinian people and all the peace-loving people in the Middle East but also the loss of a great friend of the Chinese people.

The Palestinian issue is the core of the Middle East issue and political negotiation is the only solution. The related UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace" are important political basis for the Middle East peace talks, and the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people including the right of building their own nation should become the major goal of solving the Middle East issue. China opposes any form of violent activities and stands for the effective protection of sovereignty and security of all countries in the Middle East.

The situation in the Middle East is at a critical moment and its future direction has great impact on world peace and stability. The international community should push Israel and Palestine to stop violence and resume negotiations as soon as possible, rebuild mutual trust and implement the "Road Map" plan. China is willing to work with all parties concerned to continue to make efforts towards the long-term stability and security in the Middle East.
