On May 17, 2005, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Reform and Indonesia's Former Foreign Minister Alitas who was on a working visit to China.

Li said that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations (UN). China supports rational and necessary reform of the UN to strengthen the organization's role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development. The reform of the Security Council should aim at raising efficiency and enhancing authoritativeness and give priority to greater representation of the developing countries. China does not favor setting the reform timetable or making forced voting when parties concerned still hold major differences on the specific reform scheme.

Alitas said that as a permanent member of the Security Council and the biggest developing country in the world China plays an important role in the UN and international affairs and holds a major position on the issue of UN reform. He personally expects to further exchange and discuss with China on the issue and make efforts to promote the steady progress of UN reform.
