2003-09-27 00:00

In 2002, the UN activities regarding women largely revolved around the implementation of the follow-ups to the Fourth World Conference of Women and the final document of the UN Special Session on Women, Chinawas actively involved in the UN activities concerning women.

From 4-15 March, the 46th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women was held in the UN headquarters in New York. Apart from focused reviewing and implementing the Beijing Platform for Action and the follow-up to the final document of the UN Special Session on Women, the session also devoted to two special topics including the poverty eradication through life-long empowerment of women in a globalised world and the gender perspective in environment protection and mitigation of natural disaster. Wang Yingfan, head of the Chinese delegation pointed out in his general debate statement that terrorist activities bring calamity to the innocent, women and children in particular. Poverty, disease, lack of education, social bias, sex discrimination and other factors have seriously hindered women to participate in economic and social development, further aggravating the poverty among women. Therefore, the international community should give more assistance to developing countries, which could enable the women to benefit more from the globalization. Ambassador Wang familiarized the participants with the Chinese Women Development Program 2001-2010 promulgated recently by China, and pledged to integrate the goals envisaged in the Program into overall local plans for economic and social development.

In addition, China was also represented at the 12th UN Conference of contracting parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the 26th and 27th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
