China Chairs the 8th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Security in the Use of ICTs

On May 24, 2022, Mr. Wang Lei, Rotating Chair of the BRICS  Working Group on Security in the Use of ICTs (WGSICTs) and Coordinator for Cyber Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, chaired the 8th Meeting of the BRICS WGSICTs via video link. The meeting was attended by heads of delegations of other BRICS countries, including Mr. Marcelo Camara, Director of Department of Strategic Affairs, Defense, and Disarmament of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Dr. Artur Lyukmanov, Deputy Director of Department of International Information Security of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Mrs. Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (NEST & CD) of Ministry of External Affairs of India, and Dr. Irene Moetsana-Moeng, Head of National Communications of State Security Agency of South Africa. Representatives from competent authorities of BRICS countries were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, representatives of BRICS countries had an in-depth exchange of views on the draft Progress Report on BRICS Roadmap of Practical Cooperation on Ensuring Security in the Use of ICTs, national ICTs security policies, strategies and legislation, capacity building efforts and cooperation in multilateral platforms. They were of the view that under the circumstances of major changes in the world and a pandemic both unseen in a century, risks and challenges in the realm of global ICTs security are on the rise. BRICS countries share broad common interests in ICTs security, and are expected to stand in solidarity, build consensus, and promote cooperation in this regard in an in-depth and practical manner. Guided by the Joint Statement issued at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting, BRICS countries should work together towards a global governance system in cyberspace that is more inclusive, representative and democratic.

Representatives of BRICS countries spoke highly of the 8th Meeting of the WGSICT and commended the constructive role of the Chinese side. They are willing to take the adoption of the Progress Report on BRICS Roadmap of Practical Cooperation on Ensuring Security in the Use of ICTs as a great opportunity to summarize progress, plan on future cooperation, and take BRICS cooperation on ICTs security to a new level.
