2020-04-02 23:20

On the morning of 2 April, Director General of the Protocol Department of China’s Foreign Ministry Hong Lei hosted a briefing for diplomatic missions and international organizations in China. He gave an update on COVID-19 control policies and measures concerning diplomatic missions, and answered questions. This online briefing was attended by diplomatic envoys and representatives from more than 170 missions.

Hong said that under the personal instruction and guidance of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people have united as one to fight the outbreak, and have made important achievements as a result of hard efforts. At the most trying moment in this fight, members of the diplomatic corps have expressed sympathies and support in various forms to the Chinese side. This is something that we will always remember and be grateful for.

The Chinese side has all along attached great importance to outbreak response concerning diplomatic missions, and have taken measures in terms of information disclosure, implementation of control policies, delivery of relevant supplies and arrangement for medical services, etc. These measures aim to address the difficulties faced by diplomatic missions and have been widely welcomed.

Hong pointed out that while the situation has been turning for the better in China, the virus is now fast spreading in many parts of the world, affecting people from all communities and sectors. China faces a grave challenge of preventing import of cases and Beijing, in particular, comes under enormous pressure. Further regulations on strengthening control measures have been introduced under such circumstances, and the Protocol Department has sent several notes to all members of the diplomatic corps providing updates and explanations on the latest requirements. It is hoped that colleagues from the diplomatic corps will respect and observe China’s outbreak control regulations, take proper self-protection, and at the same time support Beijing’s control efforts and follow relevant requirements to contribute to the health and safety of not just members of the diplomatic corps but also all Beijing residents.

Diplomatic envoys and representatives participating in the briefing expressed appreciation to the Chinese side for hosting this event, and their readiness to respect and comply with China’s outbreak control regulations and cooperate with relevant authorities.
