On July 18, 2019, Director-General of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Zhao Bentang met with 16 journalists of the third phase of China-Latin America Media Exchange Center of China International Press Communication Center. He briefed the journalists on China's policy towards Latin America and the relations between China and Latin America.

Director-General Zhao Bentang reviewed the journey of China-Latin America relations since the founding of the People's Republic of China. He expressed that as we are all developing countries, China has always attached great importance to developing relations with Latin American countries and regarded it as a part of the important foundation of China's diplomacy. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, President Xi Jinping has paid four visits to Latin America, which have been a strong lead of China-Latin America relations to a new era. At present, both sides enjoy close high-level exchanges, in-depth advancement of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, quantity increase and quality upgrade in economic and trade exchanges and thriving people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China-Latin America relations are at the best period in history. For the next stage, the Chinese side will continue to follow the principles of mutual trust, equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, take the joint construction of the Belt and Road as a handle, work together with Latin America to build China-Latin America relations in the new era featuring equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness and benefits for the people, so as to build China-Latin America community with a shared future.

Director-General Zhao Bentang emphasized, China has no geopolitical consideration in developing relations with Latin American countries, does not seek the so-called strategy game and does not exclude or target any third party. China follows market principles and international rules in investment and financing cooperation with Latin American countries, and helps countries in the region break the bottleneck of shortage of funds, which impedes development, and enhance independent developing capacities so as to boost local economic and social development and improvement in people's livelihood. None of Latin American countries thus got into the so-called "debt traps".

Director-General Zhao Bentang also answered questions from the journalists on the prospect of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, China's relations with countries which recently established diplomatic relations with China, including Panama, the Dominican Republic, and El Salvador, and China's practical cooperation with countries including Cuba and Argentina.

The journalists joining this event are from the mainstream media of 13 Latin American countries including Argentina, Panama, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, El Salvador, Venezuela, Uruguay and Chile.
