On May 25, 2022, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Jia Guide held a virtual consultation on polar and maritime issues with Special Envoy of French President and Ambassador for Polar and Maritime Issues Olivier Poivre d'Arvor. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on important issues such as the Antarctic marine protection, the Arctic situation and the work of the Arctic Council, and the negotiations on the International Agreement for Conserving Marine Biodiversity. Both sides agreed that this consultation, held in a harmonious and friendly atmosphere, was candid and fruitful. China and France have a broad consensus on promoting resource conservation and environmental protection in the Antarctic, maintaining peace, stability and sustainable development in the Arctic, improving global ocean governance, and other aspects. The two sides can continue to strengthen relevant exchanges and cooperation, and jointly make positive contributions to polar and ocean governance.
