China and India Hold 26th Meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs

On February 22, 2023, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the External Affairs Minister's Office Shilpak Ambule co-chaired the 26th Meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on China-India Border Affairs in Beijing. Representatives of government agencies for foreign affairs, national defense and immigration affairs of the two countries were present.

The two sides took a review on the positive progress already made in the management and control of the China-India border situation, affirmed the outcomes of the disengagement of the two border troops in four places including the Galwan Valley, and had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on the plan of consultation at the next stage and reached the following common understandings.

First, the two sides agreed to follow through on the important common understandings reached between the leaders of the two countries to further strive for the stability of the border situation.

Second, the two sides agreed to consolidate the outcomes of the negotiations, and strictly abide by the agreements and relevant common understandings reached by the two sides, avoid flare-ups in the situation on the ground and safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas.

Third, the two sides agreed to work on the basis of previously reached common understandings and meet each other half way, to promote at a faster pace the settlement of relevant issues in the western section of the China-India border, and work for an early conclusion of proposals acceptable to both sides. The two sides discussed other measures to further ease the border situation, and agreed to strive for the shift to regular management of the border areas.

Fourth, the two sides agreed to keep close diplomatic and military contacts and communication and hold the 18th Round of Corps Commanders Level Meeting at an early date.
