Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with Mr. Javier Solana

On the morning of March 16th, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met in Diaoyutai State Guest Hotel with visiting Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana

Li Zhaoxing said China would like to enhance mutual political trust with the European Union and expand bilateral cooperation in all sectors. He indicated that China supported the integration process of the European Union and was willing to see the European Union to play an active part in international affairs.

Li Zhaoxing said the Chinese government strongly condemned the terrorist blasts in Madrid. He stressed China opposed any means of terrorism and wished to strengthen cooperation with the international community, including the European Union, to fight against terrorism.

Mr. Solana said at present China-EU relations were very solid and smooth, and there would be a number of senior exchanges of visit this year. He pointed out that the European Union cherished relations with China and would like to enhance cooperation with China in bilateral and multilateral fields. He stressed that the European Union would continue to stick to the "one China" policy and hoped the situation of the Taiwan Straits would remain stable.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interest such as the integration of the European Union, non-proliferation and counter-terrorism.

Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui also attended the meeting.
