2004-05-26 00:00

On May 26, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held phone conversations respectively with French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier and European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Janvier Solana. They exchanged views mainly on the new draft resolution on the Iraqi issue by the United Nations Security Council.

Li stressed that Iraq's destiny should be controlled by its own people. The interim government of Iraq should possess full sovereignty in various fields including politics, economy, resources, security, justice and diplomacy, and Iraq should enact a new constitution as soon as possible and establish a new government with broad representation through democratic and fair elections during the period of political transition. The United Nations should and can play a role in Iraq's politics and during its reconstruction process.

The three sides all believed that China and the European Union as well as China and France should strengthen coordination and cooperation and that the United Nations should make efforts to help Iraq realize peace and stability.
